\n Safrole is a natural phenylpropene that can be extracted from a variety of plants, including sassafras and nutmeg.{24226} It is a precursor in the synthesis of insecticides, fragrances, and the psychoactive drug 3,4-methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (3,4-MDMA; Item No. 13971).{25116} MDMA is regulated as a Schedule I compound in the United States and safrole is scheduled as a List I chemical by the Drug Enforcement Agency. Biologically reactive intermediates, including safrole, can be metabolized to cytotoxic or carcinogenic compounds in vivo.{25114,25115} This product is intended for forensic and research purposes.
